Our Inner Gyroscope: The Micro-Orbit of Energy

gyroscope micro-orbit

Energy is a fascinating paradox. It seems both abundant and finite—flowing through us in a dance of plenty and then, at times, retreating, leaving us in moments of depletion. And yet, it never truly leaves us. It’s a continuous and bountiful cycle of renewal and return.

My Kundalini teacher and mentor, Guru Singh, calls this the “micro-orbit” inside of us. Usually when people think of Kundalini energy, they think of a rising action, ascending from the root chakra and reproductive organs to the crown and beyond. You might hear it being described as a “serpent” uncoiling and rising and bringing the body to ecstatic heights (and who wouldn’t want that, lol!)

And yet, when balanced, this energy returns to feed us, all the days of our lives. Sure, we can have the ecstasy, but how do you maintain that? Too much abundance of anything and we short circuit. Abundance without recycling, without gratitude and nurturing, becomes greed. And that leads to depletion in other areas of our lives.

But let’s stick to physics for a second. Energy moves and transforms. Just like water does. Water can be ice or snow or rain or mist or dew. We can drink it, bathe in it; travel across it. It feeds gardens and fills oceans. And it fills us. 70 percent of us. (And it also conducts electricity.) Lke energy, it transmutes and cycles.

In the micro-orbit within us, there are two energetic cycles or orbits, forming a cross at the heart center. There is the vertical orbit ascending and descending; and the horizontal orbit, traveling across the heart center and the width of our energetic bodies.

These two orbits act as an internal gyroscope, according to Guru Singh, helping to balance us and orient us with the earth, the cosmos, and with each other.

Our Internal Gyroscope

Consider an actual gyroscope—the kind used to help navigate, well, anything: airplanes, game systems, smart phones, scientific instruments. When it is damaged or something is stuck in it, it is unable to rotate and balance itself, let alone help align and navigate what it’s connected with.

But when it’s functioning, it stabilizes and orients, as does our micro-orbit. When it is continuously revolving, it helps us to find balance and navigate through life’s fluctuations with grace and steadiness, deepening our sense of harmony and connection.

The Cosmic Dance Within

How do we keep it in balance?

One way is to move with it. Like equals like. Think about twirling when you were a child–until you fell, laughing– or the sacred acts of whirling dervishes you might have seen on TV. Moving our bodies–which includes the micromovements of meditation and mantra–help us to connect to that orbit, as well as to the rhythms of the universe.

Consider the 5 Tibetan Rites, a series of movements known for their rejuvenating and balancing effects. (You’ll find a link to the practice here). The first rite is the act of spinning. You’re shaking off excess and recalibrating your energies to align with the greater cosmic dance.

Everything in us mirrors what is occurring in the cosmos. We twirl; the earth twirls on its axis; it rotates around the sun; which rotates around our galaxy; which spins around other galaxies, and so on. Until–

Until something collides and causes that orbit to veer off kilter: an asteroid, a burnt-out star, a supernova, a black hole. We can easily imagine these as metaphors in our own lives. We get knocked off balance until we gather ourselves, recalibrate, and tune back to our unique and natural frequencies—and once again join the dance.

By tuning into our micro-orbit, acknowledging its rhythms, and gently guiding it back to equilibrium, we reconnect with our internal compass. This realignment allows us to once again move with grace through the cycles of life.

In Closing: Internal Micro-Orbit Versus Reiki Energy (for my RAWR subscribers)

It’s interesting to discuss the yogic philosophies of energetics along with the theories behind Reiki. They may seem like they are two totally different practices. But they work together. The micro-orbit is internal and yet communicates with the intelligence of Universal Life Force energy, which uses the body of the Reiki practitioner as a conduit for healing, helping to activate and direct the client’s own innate healing energies.

This is the metaphysics of physics. The woo-woo of the what-what. It’s not easy to understand, and really doesn’t matter if you get the explanations right. It’s one of those things that when you practice enough–engaging in a devotional practice–you inherently know. Each culture has different “textures,” mythologies and scientific explanations. Exploring and experimenting with different practices helps you to find your own way to glow.
